The Tragic Hero in Shakespearean Drama: An Analytical Study of Common Traits in Light of Aristotelian Tragic Theory

Abstract
Abstract: This study examines the common traits shared by the tragic heroes in Shakespeare's major tragedies Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth, through the light of Aristotelian tragic theory. Drawing on Aristotle's Poetics, the research applies five key criteria, nobility of status, hamartia (the tragic flaw), peripeteia (reversal of fortune), anagnorisis (recognition), and catharsis to analyze how each hero's downfall is shaped by the interaction between an internal flaw and external circumstance. Using a qualitative, descriptive-analytical, and comparative methodology grounded in close textual reading, the study finds that despite differences in plot and character, the four heroes follow a consistent tragic structure: each occupies a position of high social standing, is undone by a distortion of an otherwise admirable trait, experiences a reversal driven jointly by choice and circumstance, arrives at a late moment of self-recognition, and meets an end marked by loss extending beyond himself. At the same time, the analysis demonstrates that Shakespeare extends the classical Aristotelian model by endowing his heroes with multiple, intersecting psychological pressures and by introducing supernatural elements, such as the Ghost in Hamlet and the witches in Macbeth, that complicate the boundary between fate and free will. The study concludes that Shakespearean tragedy represents not a strict application of Aristotelian theory, but a deliberate expansion of it, offering a systematic comparative framework that contributes to existing scholarship on Shakespeare's tragic heroes..................
